News that the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC) is planning a Centre of Excellence for Big Data should help put a spring in the step of our British audience, even if the weather is struggling to show any signs of green shoots just yet. Although the remit remains unclear at this stage, the HSCIC has confirmed it is taking active steps in identifying a new director who will lead the NHS’ work in exploring what the Centre sees as offering “huge potential for the application of data science,” while also hopefully acting as a catalyst to drive innovation within the NHS.

Wi-Fi availability expanded in NHS hospital
An NHS hospital is making its free wireless connectivity available to even more parts of its site, in a preview of what more NHS users can soon expect. “This technology has given us the opportunity to use our existing investment to deliver the free service for our patients, visitors and guests to enhance their experience,” confirmed its Head of IT, Alan Tuckwood.
HSCIC looking to build Big Data team
The Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC) has confirmed it is looking to recruit a Director for a planned new Centre of Excellence in Big Data and data science.
The HSCIC told the British Journal of Healthcare Computing that a proposed responsibility for this director will be “building a function that will embed data science approaches and support the Data Science Programme.”
