If the noises coming out of Davos last week are to be believed, it sounds like the Chief Executive of NHS England is serious in his ambitions to embrace the use of technology, and modernise the NHS using new ‘test beds’. NHS England aims to advance the service in close collaboration with a range of industry partners, including IBM, Philips and Verily, as well as other tech and life science players. It will certainly be interesting to see what Beverley Bryant, Director of Digital Technology at NHS England, has to say on the matter at UK e-Health Week 2016!
What’s promising is that one of the test beds focuses specifically on mental health - one of the biggest public health challenges facing Europe today. So, our latest Vox Pop focuses on whether eMental health tools can provide a panacea for systems that are struggling to cope with the current crisis.
Transforming nursing through IT
Jacqueline de Leeuw wants to advance the nursing profession and patient care. To do so, she has obtained a PhD during her nursing career. This was also when she discovered the benefits that IT can provide care-giving. De Leeuw was so successful in exploring this often disregarded topic, that her employer bestowed the newly created role of a Chief Nursing Information Officer (CNIO) upon her.
The new age of healthcare data storage
The demand for secure data storage systems is growing across Europe. Software-Defined Storage (SDS) is widely seen as an outrider for a new age of hardware-independent, Software-Defined Everything (SDE), but it will have to overcome compliance issues and legacy infrastructure investment before it gathers momentum in healthcare. How quickly will SDS take to start having a significant impact on European hospitals’ data archiving strategy?
Telepsychotherapy – a panacea for the current mental health crisis?
Mental disorders are one of the most significant public health challenges in Europe today, with 27% of the adult population having experienced at least one mental disorder over the past year. Yet even these figures, according to WHO, do not reflect the full scale of the problem. Could eMental health tools provide a panacea for healthcare systems struggling to cope?
NHS set to embrace innovation
A special new NHS ‘Test Beds’ R&D programme has been set up to examine the practical benefits for patients from the most advanced technology available.
NHS England CEO Simon Stevens revealed the plans last week at the World Economic Forum in Davos. Stevens told top-rank business leaders of his determination to revolutionise how the NHS delivers care via aggressive use of innovation.
Ethitec releases five-step guide to achieving paperless
In line with NHS England's plans to go paperless by 2020, clinical software developer Ethitec has produced a guide to assist in transitioning to paperless working.
By April 2016, clinical commissioning groups must submit plans addressing how they will eliminate the use of paper by 2020 and the guide draws upon Ethitec’s success in implementing paperless records to highlight learnings for NHS organisations.
